FAQs

What is a black box cast?

A “black box” cast is a smaller, more selective group that usually performs in a smaller theater (painted black like a box). Our black box cast will be made primarily of 9th graders and there is a maximum of 40 students.

Why are you doing a black box cast instead of a full musical this year?

We only have access to perform at BHS every other year. Without the larger stage, we are limited in the number of students who can fit on our stage.

Also, students who get to be in the full musical as 7th and 9th graders have two musical opportunities, while those who were 8th graders last year would only have one. This gives that group a second musical opportunity.

Who is directing?

Mrs. Wiser and Ms. Davis will be co-directors.

Who can participate?

The cast will primarily be 9th grade students. However, there may be a situation where an 8th grade student is cast in the black box cast as well. 8th and 9th graders are welcome to audition.

There are equal numbers of male and female roles. There are limited spots, however, so not everyone who auditions will able to participate this year.

The cast will meet during RAP for second semester. (Students in SBOs, Hope Squad, Cheer, athletes, etc. can participate if permission is obtained from advisors in advance to join our RAP group second semester.)

When will auditions be?

Auditions are Wednesday, November 19, with callback dates on Nov. 20 & 21 as needed. Students will audition to be part of the musical RAP class. Casted parts will be assigned during the first week of RAP class.

When will rehearsals be?

Rehearsals will be every day during RAP and also after school from 3-5 pm most Mondays and Wednesdays from January through April.

When will performances be?

The last week of April between April 30 and May 2, days TBD.

How can I prepare?

This is a technically involved show with many singing and dancing parts. You can prepare by practicing your vocal, dance, memorization, and stage presence skills.
